Garrett Pro-pointer

As most of you know I am a Sun-Ray dealer and very happy with the X-1 but since I have demos and sometimes use other detectors and it was time to get a hand held I could use with any of my machines. I have heard people speak very highly about the Garrett pro-pointer and decided to try one.

I was walking out my front door to go metal detecting when the UPS driver pulled up to deliver it. I signed for it and took it with me to the truck and drove to the site. Once at the site I pulled it out of the box to take a look. One of the first things I noticed was how well it was made and how it seemed very heavy duty, not something you see in pictures.

I finished unpacking the pin-pointer then the rest of my gear and headed out. Something I noticed immediately is how nice the sheath was that came with it. You simply slide the probe in through the top and now after months of hunting with it, not once has it fallen out but yet it pulls out very easy.

The Garrett pro-pointer has some really great features and was designed perfectly; it vibrates and has sound also. The closer you get to the target it vibrates faster and the beeps become more frequent to the point it is a solid tone. Another great feature that is very important is the L.E.D. that lets you know whether the Pro-pointer is on or off, it is so bright that even on the sunniest days I can look at the light and see if it is on or off.

It isn’t often but sometimes if I am hunting in the woods or in the middle of a field I will leave my headphones behind. One of the first things I noticed when hunting without headphones is the pro-pointer is very loud and even became a little annoying, I had never noticed this while hunting with my headphones and had even noted it was perfect when hunting with my headphones on. While hunting without my headphones though I quickly learned it is very easy to use it with your finger over the speaker, it quieted it down considerably but could still hear it, I have to think Garrett’s engineers designed it this way as everything else seems so perfect about the pro-pointer.

The depth you get with the pro-pointer is very close to that of the X-1. I would guess three inches on an average coin size target.  I have seen where some pin pointers claim up to six inches of depth and a few I have used in the past were lucky to get an inch.  Three inches seems about perfect to me, shallow enough you aren’t chasing a bunch of signals but enough depth you’re not scratching good targets.

A few weeks ago we had a lot of rain here in central Ohio and I hadn’t had the chance to be out in a few weeks. I didn’t care how wet the ground was or how much water was puddle up, I was going out. The manual says it is waterproof but can not stay submerged, the speaker can get wet but only for a short time. As I pulled up to the old farm field I thought to myself “this is going to be a fun, muddy mess” water was sitting everywhere but I had to do some detecting, digging my first few holes I quickly realized just how bad this was going to be.  The third hole filled with water as soon as I dug it, all the way to the top, I quickly found my target and my phone rang, I stood up to take the call and walked away for a second. Came back, pushed my plug back over and walked away. Didn’t take me long to realize I was missing my pro-pointer, walked back to the hole and couldn’t find it! After searching around frantically for a few minutes I flipped the plug back over and shoved my hand down in the cold water, there it was, completely submerged! I thought for sure it was destroyed; I turned it off then back on and pulled out a coin to test it, sounded great and worked well! I couldn’t believe it!

 Summary

The Garrett Pro-Pointer is the best hand held I have ever used, durable, compact and very simple to use. It quickly and efficiently helps recover targets and keeps you from damaging your coins and relics. The sheath makes it easy to carry and keeps me from losing it. I use it on every hunt now right along with my Sun-Ray and have been using it for about two months and haven’t had to change the battery yet. The Pro-pointer is a great tool that I have become very dependent on and would not do without.
